Water Stewardship Partnership with WWF South Africa and Institute of Natural Resources

Sappi has extended its Water Stewardship collaboration with WWF South Africa for a further four years, focusing on protecting, conserving, and managing water resources in the uMkhomazi catchment. This landscape is part of the globally significant Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot and is home to endangered species, vital wetlands, and one of South Africa’s last large free-flowing rivers. It also sustains up to two million people, provides freshwater to Sappi’s Saiccor Mill, and supports livelihoods across agriculture, forestry, and municipal systems. Large tracts of Sappi Forests plantations are located within the catchment, making its health critical to both community well-being and business sustainability.

The programme benefits local farmers, cattle owners and rural communities who rely on the catchment for livelihoods. Through partnerships with Institute of Natural Resources and Meat Naturally, farmers have restored grazing lands, improved livestock quality and gained access to new markets via mobile auctions. Youth have also been empowered through the Citizen Scientist programme, where 12 young community members monitor river health, conduct clean-ups and lead awareness campaigns, earning income while strengthening environmental stewardship.

Since 2021, the partnership has delivered tangible ecological and social outcomes:

  • 188 hectares of invasive alien vegetation cleared, replenishing an estimated 205 megalitres of water.
  • 2 323 hectares of rangeland restored, improving grazing and biodiversity.
  • 83 jobs created through restoration activities.
  • Citizen Scientists empowered to monitor water quality and guide catchment management.

Importantly, the partnership has also attracted international support through the Gerana Initiative, which selected the uMkhomazi catchment as a Landscape Discovery Lab for the man‑made cellulosic fibre sector. This platform pilots regenerative finance models that link ecological restoration with supply chain resilience, ensuring long-term sustainability and global recognition of the project’s impact.
