The Mondi Zimele hands-on approach to skills transfer and access to discounted funding is essential for the early growth and success of these forestry businesses. The programme’s impact extends beyond funding. Mondi Zimele strengthened partnerships with financial institutions, including Ithala, ABSA and the Department of Trade and Industry, enabling contractors and entrepreneurs to access much needed additional funding. These collaborations helped bridge gaps between new business owners and the financial sector, increasing rural economic participation.

Mondi Zimele provides development and support to Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and community-based enterprises located near Mondi’s operations. These areas often face limited access to economic opportunities, and Mondi Zimele plays a vital role in stimulating local development by supporting sustainable businesses with a strong emphasis on job creation. The overarching goal is to unlock economic potential, promote sustainable development, and generate employment within these communities. In 2025, Mondi Zimele supported 24 SME enterprises , providing over R29.5million in discounted loans. These businesses include silviculture, harvesting, and timber transport starts-up and developing businesses, as well as a timber farm acquisition.
