Timber plantation ownership
South Africa is home to thousands of timber growers; not just one or two multinational companies. It is estimated that there are more than 26 000 timber growers, with only 11 of these defined as large corporate companies.
Timber growers range from the larger growers including the South African Government to 1 300 medium-scale commercial timber farmer and more than 25 000 small-scale timber growers. The majority of timber growers are small-scale subsistence growers, aided by forestry co-operatives and social development schemes facilitated by the large-scale corporate companies.
